Our Story

Yang Yum brings to Waterloo, Ontario the deliciously secret Korean recipes of owner and chief cook, the mysterious 정연.

The name Yang Yum was conceived over the course of a long night of plotting, scheming, and spiced rum. A slight variation of the typical spelling Yangnyum or Yangnyeom, the word refers to a variety of seasoned fried chicken - our version Yang Yum is meant to sound even more yummy. Although we offer a variety of Korean dishes - Yang Yum Korean Fried Chicken is our passion and our specialty.

Our beginnings were humble - we opened in May 2018 as a takeout and delivery food counter in the Waterloo Central Supermarket. In 2019 we expanded our space there, adding a counter where our customers could eat as well as some new items to our menu. In May 2020, like many businesses, we succumbed to the impact of COVID-19 and decided to close Yang Yum and leave the supermarket.

During the summer of 2020 we discovered the location at Linden Square, and although we weren't sure if it was a wise idea to re-open so quickly, we decided to proceed with a bigger and better Yang Yum!

JUNG YUN

Chief Cook and Owner/Director

Jungyun (Adela) was born in Seoul, Korea and attended Sejong University, majoring in arts. She relocated to Canada in 2015 and enrolled in a Hotel and Restaurant Management program at Conestoga College. In 2018, after graduating, Jungyun realized her dream of starting her own restaurant, by opening Yang Yum.

Responsible for all of Yang Yum's onsite operations, Jungyun is especially excited to introduce Kitchener-Waterloo to the well-known Korean chicken and kimbap recipes that she enjoyed and grew up with in Seoul.

JER

Official Yang Yum Taster and Owner/Director

In addition to his responsibilities as official taster, Jeremy (젤어미) also handles graphic design, web design, Yang Yum's meagre social media presence, delivery partnerships, and the like.

Jeremy attended the University of Waterloo and subsequently settled in the area, largely by accident. Outside of Yang Yum, Jeremy has acheived a modest amount of obscurity working at a local software company.

He can often be found on the GO Train to Toronto, dreaming of delicious 갈비.
